Calming the new job jitters: what to expect during your first 90 days

So, you've decided to embark on the next step in your career. Congratulations! The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) welcome you and want to help you feel as prepared and confident as possible on your first day. Below is some basic information regarding steps, activities and events you can expect during your first days/weeks on the job. This list is not exhaustive and is meant as a general guideline.

Day 1: Step 1

  • Arrive at Welcome Centre
  • Receive security pass
  • View videos, establish networks with new recruits, etc.
  • Manager or Peer Partner greets you at Welcome Centre

Day 1: Step 2

  • Manager/Peer Partner takes you to new workspace
  • Manager administers oath or affirmation
  • Introductions to team/other associated teams
  • Tour of workplace facilities
  • Meet with manager to discuss projects/work (work plan)

First 30 days: Step 3

  • Complete any last HR/IT requirements
  • Begin working on project with project coach
  • Introductions to branch management/stakeholders
  • Team meeting, coffee and/or lunch
  • Consider job and career training

First 90 days: Step 4

  • Complete online Public Service Orientation
  • Complete/Attend DFO/CCG Orientation
  • Attend mandatory training courses
  • Attend various networking events
  • Complete Stay Questionnaires: Onboarding experience
