Commercial fisheries play an important role in Quebec's economy, particularly in the maritime regions. In Quebec, Fisheries and Oceans Canada manages the commercial fisheries undertaken in marine areas. The Department is mandated to preserve and protect marine resources in order to ensure the economic prosperity of fisheries.

Variation order (fishing periods)
Under paragraph 6 (1) of the Fishery (General) Regulations, the Regional Director of Fisheries and Oceans Canada may, by order, amend the regulations concerning the closure period, the quota, size limit and the zone or part of the zone.
