Empress of Ireland: Subject of evolving hydrographic technologies

Major nautical advances have been made since the 1914 sinking of the Empress of Ireland ocean liner. At the time of the shipwreck, there was no sonar, no GPS, and navigating with digital charts was still beyond the reach of even the most scientific of imaginations. It was not until 1983 that the Canadian Hydrographic Service was able to indicate the wreck's location on Chart 1236.

He is replacing Ariane Plourde, who left in December 2013 to pursue her career at the head of the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski.

New Provisions of the Fisheries Act

On June 29, 2012, the Fisheries Act was amended to strengthen DFO’s ability to manage threats to the sustainability and productivity of Canada’s commercial, recreational and Aboriginal fisheries. These changes include improved compliance and protection tools, and more accurate and consistent regulatory requirements. Provisions to establish or strengthen partnerships, including with other government agencies and local groups to ensure a comprehensive approach is taken to protect fisheries, are also part of these amendments.
