Preliminary results for the 2019 Commercial Fisheries season in Quebec Preliminary data for the 2019 fishing season in Quebec show landings valued at $378 million. This represents a 10% increase over 2018. Historically, this is the second best year after 2017.

Winter Recreational Groundfish Fishery in the Saguenay Fjord The ice fishing season in the Saguenay fjord will be in full swing until Sunday, March 8, 2020. Many fishers will be there to try to catch redfish, Atlantic cod, Greenland cod and Greenland halibut.

Unusual water level variations in the St. Lawrence associated with Hurricane Dorian Hurricane Dorian, which became a post-tropical storm over Quebec on September 7 and 8, 2019, disturbed the normal tidal cycle, causing extraordinary water level variations. During the storm’s passage, numerous storm surge warnings were issued for the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In Quebec, the Magdalen Islands were particularly affected.

New Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard On November 20, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed the Honourable Bernadette Jordan as Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard. Minister Jordan, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margarets, Nova Scotia, takes over from the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, who has been appointed Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

Mission Accomplished! Last July, scientists from the Maurice Lamontagne Institute (MLI) in Mont‑Joli boarded the CCGS Leim for a 20-day mission aimed at documenting the state of the snow crab population in the St. Lawrence Estuary. The Fisheries and Oceans Canada team had a busy schedule ahead of them. For the first time, this demographic monitoring research on snow crab included an important biodiversity and environment component.

Fishery Officers Meet With Boaters From July 25 to August 4, more than 800 recreational boaters from the North Shore, the Magdalen Islands and the Gaspé Peninsula were made aware of the best practices that should be adopted to protect marine mammals.

New Regional Director of Science for Quebec Fisheries and Oceans Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Jean-Yves Savaria as Regional Director of Science. He took over this position at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, in Mont-Joli, on October 3 from Yves de Lafontaine, who is now retired.

New Associate Regional Director General for Quebec Region Fisheries and Oceans Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Sylvain Vézina as Associate Regional Director General for Quebec. On October 17, he took over the reins from Jean-Yves Savaria, who is now Regional Director of Science.

The St. Lawrence River Striped Bass: Public Consultation on its Recovery Fisheries and Oceans Canada is publishing, for consultation, the Recovery Strategy and Action Plan for the Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis), St. Lawrence River population, in Canada, a proposal developed under the Species at Risk Act to guide the recovery of the river's striped bass.
