A conservative approach in the establishment of the TAC was used to take into account the increased risk to the conservation of the stock in order to ensure the sustainability of this fishery and not to further weaken the shrimp fishers of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence in the future. Thus, a method of conditioning the projected removals from the precautionary approach was used to establish the TAC. In order to take socio-economic factors into account, the reduction will be implemented gradually over two years.

The other management measures of the 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) published on March 30, 2022 remain unchanged.

DFO reiterates its intention to complete the review of the precautionary approach with industry and First Nations prior to the next stock assessment scheduled for January 2024.
