Investments in Small Craft Harbours in Quebec
By spring 2017, some 62.6 million dollars will have been allocated for 54 harbour infrastructure projects in Quebec. Under the direction of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, these projects will be carried out in cooperation with the harbour authorities that operate and manage these facilities for local users.
Small craft harbours serve the commercial fishing industry. In Canada, close to 90% of fishermen use them. The support that has been announced will help keep these harbours, which are critical to the Quebec fishing industry, open and in good repair while improving safety and working conditions for fishers.
The projects will involve maintaining, repairing or building marine structures for the commercial fishery, such as docks, breakwaters and boat launches. The channels or basins used by fishermen will also be dredged for the safe and continued operation of the harbours.
In total, 34 small craft fishing harbours will have this maintenance, repair and construction work done.
