ANNOUNCEMENT OF MANAGEMENT MEASURES-ATLANTIC HALIBUT 4RST MAGDALEN ISLANDS FLEET 2024-2025 SEASON
Magdalen Islands – July 2, 2024
Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region announces the 2024-2025 management measures for the Atlantic halibut fixed gear fleet from Magdalen Islands.
Quota and management regime
The initial allocation of the fleet is 162.4 t, managed under individual transferable quotas (ITQ).
Fishing Season
The duration of the fishing season is 16 weeks, as follows:
Period 1: From July 14 to October 5, 2024
Period 2: From April 1 to April 28, 2025
Fishing gear
As of this year, licence holders with an initial quota exceeding 3,500 kg may use 2,000 hooks.
In addition, fish harvesters do not have the obligation to bring back their fishing gear at the end of each fishing trip. However, they must respect the maximum soaking time authorized which is 72 hours.
Electronic logbook
The use of the electronic logbook remains optional.
Vessel monitoring system (VMS)
Discussions with fleet representatives will continue over the next year regarding the implementation of VMS planned for the 2025-2026 season.
Other management measures
The other management measures remain unchanged.
Licence conditions
