New Regional Director of Science for Quebec
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Jean-Yves Savaria as Regional Director of Science. He took over this position at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, in Mont-Joli, on October 3 from Yves de Lafontaine, who is now retired.
Mr. Savaria has a bachelor’s degree in biology from the Université du Québec à Montréal and a master’s degree in oceanography from the Université du Québec à Rimouski. He has about 20 years of experience with the Department. He first joined the Department as a biologist in the Oceans Management Program, where he worked mainly on the development of the Marine Protected Areas Program in the Quebec Region. He then held various positions of increasing responsibility within the Regional Ecosystems Management Branch, including Manager of the Fish Habitat Protection Program from 2009 to 2013 and Regional Manager, Regulatory Reviews at Fisheries Protection until early 2019.
In January 2019, Mr. Savaria was appointed Associate Regional Director General for the Quebec Region. Already a key player on the regional management team, he will continue to use his scientific knowledge and expertise to support the Department’s various mandates.
